What is an affordable way for a freelancer to get a document signed?
One option is the Docmend Chrome extension. Its free plan includes 10 signature requests a month, and Pro, at $4 a month or $36 a year, makes them unlimited. Your client signs from a link with no account, and the signed PDF is emailed to you both. Docmend adds a simple electronic signature, used for proposals, quotes and approvals.
Other routes: download a PDF and have your client sign it in a PDF app, which is free and works everywhere but depends on your client knowing how to sign a PDF and remembering to return it, or use a dedicated e-signature service, which charges a monthly fee; see the compare pages below for current prices. For side-by-side prices, see Docmend vs SignWell and Docmend vs Docusign. See also how to get a Google Doc signed and how to get someone to sign a document online for free.
How to send a document for signature
- Add Docmend to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. It is free and needs no account.
- Open the Doc, click the Docmend icon, pick Use a Google Doc, and choose Send for signature. You can also upload a PDF from your computer or open one from a link.
- Tap the page where your client should sign. You can also add name and date boxes.
- Enter your client’s email, or copy the signing link and send it yourself.
- Your client opens the link, draws or types a signature, and clicks Finish. The signed PDF is emailed to you and to your client, with a signing certificate as the last page.
