Do I need to give Docmend access to my Google Drive?
No. The Docmend Chrome extension does not ask for Google Drive access, and there is no Google permission screen. It uses the Doc open in your tab and the sign-in you already have. PDF import, the Word check, and PDF export run in your browser. A copy is uploaded for a review link or signature request, and the file converters (Office to PDF, PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, Word to JPG, EPUB to PDF) send your file to Docmend’s conversion service, which converts and deletes it straight away.
What stays on your computer
| Task | Uploaded? |
|---|---|
| Import PDF notes into the open Google Doc | No. The PDF is read in your browser. |
| Word check, or a PDF that keeps comments | No. Both run in your browser. |
| Review link or signature request | Yes. A copy is uploaded so the link can be opened. You can delete it. |
This is separate from sharing the Google Doc itself. A normal Docs share link still asks many reviewers to sign in before they can comment. A Docmend review link does not. See how PDF notes get into a Google Doc.
How to do it
- Open the Google Doc in Chrome while you are already signed in. Docmend uses that tab. It does not show a Google Drive permission screen.
- PDF import, the Word check, and saving a PDF with comments run in the browser. Those steps do not upload the file.
- A copy is uploaded when you create a review link or a signature request, so the other person can open the link. You can delete that copy. The file converters also send the file you choose to Docmend’s conversion service, which converts and deletes it straight away.
- Docmend is available on the Chrome Web Store. It is free to install.
