Why does Chrome say an extension is debugging the browser while comments are added?

By the Docmend team · Updated 2026-10-11

Short answer

When the Docmend Chrome extension imports PDF notes, it adds each comment the way you would: it selects the text and uses the comment shortcut. Chrome shows the “debugging this browser” bar whenever an extension types into a page. The bar disappears as soon as the import finishes.

The bar comes from Docmend’s optional “debugger” permission, which is used only to type comments into the Google Doc you are viewing, and only while an import is running. See the privacy policy and how to turn PDF comments into Google Docs comments.

What happens during an import

  1. Add Docmend to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store and pin the Docmend icon. No account to create.
  2. Open any Google Doc and click the icon. The side panel connects to the Doc using your own Google sign-in.
  3. Choose Import PDF notes and drop in the marked-up PDF. Docmend finds the same words in your Doc.
  4. Edit or skip any note before it’s added.
  5. While Docmend selects each passage and uses the comment shortcut, Chrome shows the “debugging this browser” bar. It disappears as soon as the import finishes.
