How to let someone comment on a Google Doc without a Google account
Not with a normal share link. Instead, have them create a Google account with their existing email, use Google Workspace visitor sharing (if the owner’s organization allows it; they enter a PIN emailed by Google), send a PDF or Word copy, or share a review link from the Docmend Chrome extension, where anyone can comment with just their name.
Why does Google Docs ask reviewers to sign in?
Link sharing in Google Docs lets anyone open the document. Leaving a comment is different: Docs attaches every comment to an account, so a visitor who isn’t signed in is asked to sign in first. For a client who uses Outlook or a work email, that is often where the review stops.
Option 1: Ask them to create a Google account with their own email
A Google account does not need a Gmail address. On Google’s sign-up page your reviewer can choose to use their current email address instead of creating a Gmail one, and register with their work address. After that they can comment like anyone else.
It is free, but it asks your client to create an account just to give you feedback, and some company policies don’t allow it.
Option 2: Use visitor sharing (Google Workspace only)
If your organisation is on Google Workspace, your admin can turn on visitor sharing. You share the Doc with the person’s email address, and they verify with a PIN sent to that inbox. They can then comment without a Google account for 7 days, and can verify again from the original sharing email if they need longer (Google Drive Help). This is not available on free personal Google accounts.
Option 3: Send a PDF or Word copy
- In the Doc, choose File → Download and pick PDF or Microsoft Word.
- Email the file. Your reviewer marks it up in their own app and sends it back.
- Move their notes into your Doc.
Everyone can do this, but the feedback now lives in a separate file, and you carry it back by hand. Our guide on turning PDF comments into Google Docs comments covers that last step.
Option 4: Share a review link with Docmend
- Open your Doc, click the Docmend icon, pick Use a Google Doc, and choose Get feedback.
- Click Create review link and send the link by email or chat.
- Your reviewer opens it in any browser, selects text, and leaves a note. They type their name once. There is no sign-in and nothing to install.
- Their notes appear in Docmend, and one click adds them to your Doc as comments on the same text.
The link shows a read-only copy, so reviewers can’t change your document. You can close the link to new notes or delete it at any time.

Common questions
Can a reviewer edit my document through a review link?
No. A Docmend review link is a read-only copy. Reviewers can highlight text, leave notes, and approve or sign. Your original Doc changes only when you add their notes.
Does the reviewer need to install Docmend?
No. The review link opens as a normal web page on a computer or phone. Only the person who owns the document needs the extension.
Does it work for PDFs and Word files too?
Yes. You can upload a PDF or Word file in Docmend and share a review link the same way. For a PDF, you can download it afterwards with the reviewer’s notes as PDF comments.
